In the UK, there are six official bank holidays that are spelled out in the Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971 that are observed throughout the country.
The six holidays are New Year’s Day, Good Friday, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.
Also, Easter Monday and Summer Bank Holiday are bank holidays in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These two dates are not official bank holidays in Scotland. However, most Scottish banks synchronize with the rest of the UK and are closed on these days.
There are also other public holidays where banks are closed in specific regions only.
If a bank holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then the banks will be closed on a substitute day, typically the following Monday.
